A new report on Moroccan cinema and audiovisual media was released on March 27 by Euromed Audiovisual and the European Audiovisual Observatory. The 149-page report sheds light on the significant efforts exerted by the Moroccan authorities and professionals to foster an ambitious cinematographic and audiovisual policy through a number of initiatives, taking into account the new legal framework established by the Constitution adopted by Moroccan people on July 1st, 2011.

The report does not evaluate or assess the sector of cinema industry and audiovisual media in Morocco. Rather it gives information to the Mediterranean audience about the course of development of these sectors in the country by providing detailed statistics and illustrative graphs based on national and European studies and reports in this respect.

“The objective of these case studies is not to assess the national film industry and audiovisual media or to provide recommendations, but to provide public professionals from southern Mediterranean countries and Europe the information that could allow better understanding of the situation in order to facilitate regional partnerships,” says European Union ambassador Eneko. Landaburu.

The objective of the report is to provide an overview of all the recent strides in the audiovisual sector in Morocco. Hence, it touches upon the development of telecommunication infrastructure (which skyrocketed since 2000), the regulatory framework for television, the patterns of audiovisual distribution, Moroccan television landscape, the continuous training and development of the audiovisual staff, the cinema market in Morocco, the Internet, etc. The report provides a comprehensive overview of the various economic aspects of the audiovisual sector and makes a meticulous description of the regulatory frameworks.

The modernization of the audiovisual and cinematographic sector was the subject of a hot public debate and governmental initiatives since the adoption of the new constitution, especially during the preparation of the specifications of the audiovisual reform by the Minister of Communication and government spokesperson Mr. Mostapha El Khalfi.

The latest measures in this reform, announced in January 2013, consist of the establishment of two committees by the Moroccan Cinematographic Center to support the modernization and digitization of movie theaters in the country and to promote film festivals. Another initiative taken by the Ministry of Communication was the creation of a portal dedicated to submitting projects for production companies. This measure was meant to ensure greater transparency between public broadcasters and independent production companies.
