Rabat – Eid Al-Fitr will be celebrated on Wednesday, July 6, 2016 in Morocco, according to astronomical calculations.

According to Mohammed Oudah, the head of the Islamic project for monitoring the crescents at the International Astronomy Center in Abu Dhabi, Wednesday marks the end of the holy month of Ramadan and the start of Eid Al Fitr in most Islamic countries, including Saudi Arabia, UAE, Qatar, Kuwait and Morocco.

Oudah said that most Muslim countries, with the exception of Morocco, Oman, Pakistan, India and Iran, will look out for the crescent moon on Monday.

He added that the moon is forecast to line up with the sun on that day, making the sighting of the moon on that day impossible in those areas.

However, the same source added that the sighting of the crescent of the month of ‘Shawwal’ will be easily observed without sophisticated equipment on Tuesday, from different location around the Islamic world, except for Turkey and the Balkans, which have announced earlier that Eid Al-Fitr will be on Tuesday.

Until now, there has been no official statement from the Ministry of Endowment and Islamic Affairs in Morocco on the date of the Eid Al-Fitr.

Morocco rely on the sighting of the moon by naked eyes, and has more than 270 observatories across the country to determine the date of Eid el Fitr, including units from the Royal Army.

Eid Al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha (the Feast of Sacrifice) are two holidays celebrated by Muslims around the world. The first marks the end of Ramdan, a month when Muslims abstain from food, drink, smoking and sexual intercourse during daylight and the second, which falls on the 10th day of the Islamic month of Dhu al-Hijjah, honors the willingness of prophet Ibrahim (Abraham) to sacrifice his son Ismail as an act of submission to Allah’s (God’s) command.
