Miami – Morocco ranked first place in economic competitiveness in the North Africa region, based on a study by the World Economic Forum (WEF).

The WEF published its “Global Competitiveness Report” for 2015-2016 on September 30. In the report, Morocco ranked highest among the North African countries.

The WEF characterized Morocco as a powerful nation in a region known for its vulnerability and challenges. Globally, the Kingdom ranked 72 out of the 140 countries included in the study.

The Kingdom showed stability as it maintained the same ranking compared to the last Global Competitiveness Report.

Algeria and Tunisia followed Morocco in North Africa.

The Global Competitiveness Report provides an international ranking using a “hundred economic indicators like quality of infrastructure, macroeconomic environment, market size, technological development, and innovation.”

In the Forum’s rankings, Algeria landed at 87, Tunisia at 92, Egypt at 116, and Mauritania at 138.

Algeria and Tunisia dropped eight and five spots, respectively, compared to last year’s report.

Meanwhile, Mauritius ranked the highest in Africa at 39 overall, followed by South Africa (49), Rwanda (58) and Botswana (71).

According to the WEF, the most competitive economy in the world is Switzerland, followed by Singapore (2) and the United States (3). Switzerland has ranked at the top for the last 7 years.

At the lower end of the report, the two countries with the worst economic competitiveness out of the 140 studied by the WEF were Chad and Guinea, ranking 139 and 140, respectively.
