The head of the delegation of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in Israel and the occupied territories, Jean-Pierre Schaerer, welcomed on Tuesday Morocco’s “great support” for the Palestinian population in Gaza after sending a multidisciplinary medical-surgical field hospital.

“It is important for the Palestinians, who have been through a very difficult situation these past ten days, to know that there is a possibility to have access to quick quality medical care,” Schaerer added.

The ICRC official described as “excellent” cooperation between the Moroccan medical-surgical unit and the Palestinian Red Crescent.

Commenting on the humanitarian situation in Gaza, he said the territory is a small area with a high population density (about 1.8 million) with “extremely difficult living conditions”.

“This is a very unusual situation with a lot of restrictions in terms of movement, very few opportunities for the population, especially with incidents such as the events of the past week, major hostilities and acts of violence which have a psychological impact on the population, “he said.

The unit, deployed on orders of HM King Mohammed VI, is made up of 26 doctors and is open to all patients in the Gaza Strip.  It includes an operating room, emergency rooms, care and first aid rooms, a medical laboratory, and an ambulance.
