CAIRO, Nov 20, 2012 (AFP)

Egyptian protesters clashed with police in Cairo for a second day on Tuesday on the one year anniversary of deadly clashes that left 45 dead, an AFP reporter said.

Protesters and police pelted each other with stones and rocks and some demonstrators set fire to tyres in the middle of roads off Tahrir Square.

Medics said around 60 people were injured in two days of confrontations. One protester, a member of the April 6 movement, is in critical condition, the group said.

On Monday, clashes erupted when protesters tried to destroy a concrete barrier security forces had put up to end last year’s fighting with activists who wanted the then military rulers to transfer power to a civilian government.

At least 45 protesters died in the five days of street battles that began on November 19 last year to put pressure on the military, which took power after a popular uprising overthrew president Hosni Mubarak in February.

The military responded by promising to hand over power by June this year. It transferred control to Islamist President Mohamed Morsi after his election that month.
