Egypt braces for arrival of football squad after crushing defeat

CAIRO - Egyptian authorities have beefed up security measures at Cairo International Airport ahead of the arrival of the national football squad from Ghana following a crushing defeat in a World Cup playoff.

A plan has been put into force to secure entrances of the airport and roads leading to the building in an effort to prevent any encounter between the players and angry fans, according to a security source.

In almost its most humiliating African defeat, Egypt was thrashed 6-1 by Ghana on Tuesday in the first leg of the World Cup qualifiers. The defeat stifles Egypt’s hopes to qualify for the tournament for the first time in more than two decades.

The security source said the plan, which will be implemented in cooperation between military and police forces, includes measures to secure vital airport buildings and manual checks of vehicles coming to the airport.

“The forces are ready to deal with any emergency at any time,” the source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told the Anadolu Agency.

He added that measures will be taken to secure the team players until they reach their homes.
