Maghreb: AMU, summit in Rabat on Saturday

RABAT, FEBRUARY 15 – The Foreign Trade Ministers of the five countries that make up the Arab Maghreb Union (AMU) will hold a meeting in Rabat on Saturday. The goal of the meeting is to re-launch the social-economic integration process in the region.

The integration of the Arab Maghreb has been in a stalemate for many years now, mainly due to the conflict in the Western Sahara, but also the ostracism by former Libyan dictator Gaddafi. The countries that form the union are Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Mauritania and Libya. Last week, the new President of Tunisia, Marzouki, visited Morocco, Mauritania and Algeria in an attempt to get the project going again. His tour has resulted in an agreement to hold a Maghreb summit in Tunis this year.
